Pick of the week

Two separate Employee Sentiment reports by ELMO looked at workers attitudes in Australia and New Zealand. They make stark reading. In Australia:

  • 34% of workers reported feeling burnt out
  • 22% feel overwhelmed by the workload
  • 24% of Australians arrived at work feeling unwell – pointing to increased presenteeism.
  • 51% may look for new roles if the economy improves

ELMO Software CEO Danny Lessem commented: “The COVID-19 induced economic slowdown influenced more than half of Australians in their decision to search for a new job.

“Job seeking can rise steeply when economic growth returns. It’s important that employers look after their people during the good times and the bad times to encourage them to stay with the company. It doesn’t take long for an employee to go from feeling burnt out to feeling like they need a new job.”

There is a stark difference In New Zealand with:

  • 58% feel their job is secure
  • 17% feel they are not working enough hours
  • 28% of New Zealanders arrived at work feeling unwell in the last three months

ELMO Software CEO Danny Lessem commented: “As the economy incrementally returns to normal it’s encouraging to see almost three-fifths of New Zealanders feel secure in their job. Job security is an important factor for how people perform in the workplace and how they act as consumers – which can have a flow on effect for the economic recovery and business performance.”

The studies findings indicate that Australian business owners may need to do more to retain staff. In both countries, the issue of presenteeism is an issue that is surprising considering the pandemic.
