This is Charles Brett’s start-of-the-week Enterprise Times ‘blockchain catch-up’ 2022-Week 34. Necessarily it is idiosyncratic and selective.
It is not intended to be comprehensive but does seek to highlight ‘Quick Takes’ on specific developments as well interesting pieces to read, a listing of some (not all) announcements/press releases and pointers to upcoming events.
Quick Take(s) – Charles Brett’s Blockchain Catch-up 2022-Week 34
DTCC’S Project Ion platform is now in production, processing 100K transactions a day
The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) provides post-trade market infrastructure for the financial services industry. It has announced that its Project Ion platform, which is being developed as an alternative settlement platform leveraging distributed ledger technology (DLT), has gone live in a parallel production environment while upholding the firm’s rigorous resiliency and safety standards. The Project Ion platform – built on a private permissioned DLT platform – is now parallel processing an average of over 100K bilateral equity transactions per day, and almost 160K transactions on peak days, with DTCC subsidiary, The Depository Trust Company’s (DTC’s), classic settlement systems remaining the authoritative record.
Quick Take: the significance is that DLT (or blockchain) formally enters the real world. Though the classic settlement system remains the authoritative record, if Project Ion succeeds in production, then it may only be a matter of time before a major post-trade platform transitions to depend on a blockchain as the authoritative record, albeit it a private, permissioned one. A step forward? Or a BIG step forward?
