Pick of the week

Xero has launched its Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD for ITSA) beta. Despite the delay of MTD for ITSA until 2024, this new beta will pave the way for sole traders to do their record-keeping online in the future. Sole traders and landlords with gross income over £10,000 can now sign up for the pilot long before the deadline. It puts them in the best possible position to prepare.

Alex von Schirmeister, Xero’s UK & EMEA managing director, said, “Almost half of the UK’s small businesses (45%) rely heavily on their trusted accountant. Against a challenging backdrop, this is only going to accelerate as the next phase of MTD gathers pace.

“It might seem like a long way off, but now is the time to start thinking about quarterly reporting for sole trader businesses. By launching this beta, and working with HMRC and our accounting partners, we hope to provide the right tools and support to ensure the preparation is as seamless as possible.”

Xero is looking for specific business types at the moment:

  • Income from a single sole trade business (landlords are not yet supported but will be soon).
  • Use Xero for the full financial year, 6 April 2022 to 5 April 2023, which must also align with their financial year.
  • Sign up for MTD for ITSA for the tax year 2022/23.
  • Have existed before 9 February 2021.
