Europol
Europol has published its AI bias in law enforcement – a practical guide. At 59 pages, it examines how AI is utilised by law enforcement and, importantly, the implications of its use. Importantly, it is not just about operational issues, but also its impact on public trust and fairness. It identifies several inherent risks associated with the use of the technology, as well as its benefits.
The paper is well balanced and has wider implications beyond policing. Several of the issues here apply to any use of technology to manage people, such as HR, office security or CCTV management at shopping centres. The report calls for the consistent application of legal safeguards as outlined in the AI Act. It sees that as the best way to mitigate bias.
Logicalis
Logicalis announced that it has reached a key milestone on its journey to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. It has reached the targets it set for itself for 2025 for both Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. Among those goals are that Spain, Germany, Portugal, Australia, UK & Ireland have transitioned to majority renewable energy. It has also developed and implemented carbon and energy reduction plans by country.
noyb
noyb has filed a complaint against dating app Bumble, which is now using AI to help people improve their chances of finding a romantic partner. The AI takes all the data given to it by the customer, including sexual orientation and age, and creates what it calls AI Icebreakers.
Customers were not explicitly asked for consent to allow the AI to use their data. Instead, Bumble employed dark patterns to persuade people to click “OK.” It has also made it extremely difficult for customers to get the details on what data the AI has access to.
All this comes at a time when the company continues to lose money and plans to make staff redundant while increasing its use of technology.
