Is identity an enabler or risk for your business? (Image Credit: allison-saeng-Rav7FP1adww-unsplash)Identity is at the core of security, yet despite the billions spent yearly on identity systems, it remains a weak point. Part of the problem is the continual reinvention of security products and new terms that organisations have to wade through. It often leaves them confused as to what they should do, and they jump from one solution to another.

The arrival of agentic AI is only going to make the problem worse. 97% of most identities that IT teams “manage” are non-human. That is likely to increase as people use more and more agents who need access to the system to do their job.

At Infosecurity Europe, Enterprise Times talked with Dave McGrail, head of business consultancy at Xalient. One of the challenges that McGrail sees IT grappling with is transformation. While most focus on business outcomes, he sees it as also enabling a better outcome for identity management.

McGrail commented, “Identity hasn’t been seen as an IT problem or as even a security problem. It’s been a corner case that often sits with a CISO budget and is a nice to have until there’s a breach. All of a sudden, people decide that we should put some focus on it.”

There are two areas where McGrail sees identity as a business enabler. The first is in the development of an identity-driven network and security transformation. The second is the M&A cycle. Both will have an impact on future M&A activity for organisations as they look at risk and identity.
