The need for mental resilience support in cybersecurity (Image Credit: marcel-strauss-fzqxoFJytiE-unsplash)How do we help people in cybersecurity create greater mental resilience? It’s a complicated question that recognises the pressures of the industry. However, despite all the talk, it’s clear that the industry needs to do more to help people.

At Infosecurity Europe, Enterprise Times talked with Bronwyn Boyle, who, in addition to her role as CISO at PPRO, is EVP Resilient Communities at cybermindz. In that latter role, Boyle is a staunch and energetic advocate for greater mental health support in cybersecurity.

One of the challenges for the industry is that it is now seeking to attract a new generation who have a different mindset. They want a work-life balance in an industry that has been more work than balance.

When asked what expectations people now had, Boyle commented, “They definitely have stronger expectations around flexibility and work-life balance, which I think is very reasonable. That sense of mission is still very important. But it needs to be stressed more strongly now that if it’s a vocation, and you just by default have that setting, we need to work harder for that generation of talent.”

But working harder for that generation of talent is a serious challenge for all organisations. Few organisations have a roadmap for managers that includes soft skills training. Human Resources has abdicated its role to advocate for employees and today, focuses more on protecting the business. So what do we do?

Boyle said, “We talk about the trifecta of people, process and technology. This is part of your people stack. We’re all optimising the performance of our tech stacks. Let’s optimise the performance of our mental health stack and our mental well-being stack.”
