Otter.ai is a speech-to-text transcription app that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to record and transcribe conversations in real-time. It can be used for meetings, lectures, interviews, and more. When you record and then import your mp3 file to Otter.ai you get a transcript of the interview. It doesn’t always get everything correct about who is speaking, especially if they are short responses. Sometimes it adds a few words onto one person, before switching to the next voice. sometimes it puts down what it thinks the sentence should be, not exactly what the voice said. Also the spelling is good but not perfect. But sometimes there are faults in the transcript. You need to change things or move text to the correct persons paragraphs. This can be done easily within Otter.ai. Let me show you how.
Here is an example within Otter.ai within the Home section.
This shows the date and time of the recording. It shows there is an introduction to the recording, an overview and an introduction to the company. It shows the time those items took up in the recording.
Selecting the [Show more button] at the bottom of the list reveals extra information about the conversation.
Opening the first item
- Click on the title of the recording.
This opens the recording in a new window.
Here we have a [Summary Tab] and a [Transcript Tab].
What to expect in a Summary tab
Here, you could see many headings with bullet points or just a few, depending on what is discussed.
In general, you will be presented with the following:
- Overview: – A short paragraph of what was talked about and who was talking.
- Action Items: Two items are listed, such as “provide speaker with the recording link for the meeting.” You can add more.
- Outline: This section may consist of several sections outlining what is discussed and finishing with a conclusion.
What’s in the Transcript Tab
Click on the Transcript Tab, and you will be presented with a transcription of the whole meeting/discussion that you have recorded.
Starting at the top of the window
As this recording was made by Ian Murphy who has recorded several meetings before, Otter.ai automatically recognises his voice and therefore places his name at the start under the title of the recording. Followed by the date and time, how long the recording is, and the ability to copy the summary to be pasted elsewhere.
Keywords
Otter.ai picks out Keywords for you.
Speakers
You see a breakdown of the percentage of time each speaker takes. At this point, as these other voices are unknown to Otter.ai, it can only differentiate between them as Speaker 1, Speaker 2, etc.
Moving down the window each speaker is tagged at specific times with a transcript of what they said.
