Talking AI strategy with Rania Khalaf at WSO2 (Image Credit: AI-generated by Ian Murphy using Microsoft Designer)At WSO2Con in Barcelona, the company announced that it was all-in on AI. Nothing new there. Every software vendor is making the same claim. For WSO2, the difference is that they are making AI a first-class concept. As part of that, every application will have AI infused into its core capabilities. That work is already underway and will be surfaced as new versions of its products are released.

To gain a better understanding, Enterprise Times Editor Ian Murphy sat with WSO2’s Queen of AI, Rania Khalaf, to learn more. Khalaf is no stranger to AI. She has been working on deep learning, machine learning and AI systems for over a decade.

Khalaf sees AI as a key enabler that will enhance existing capabilities and enable organisations to get more out of their tools. She comments, “We don’t see AI as a separate product on its own that we do separately from the core capabilities we have around helping you build awesome, intelligent digital experiences.”

To get the most out of tools, however, they need to be AI-native applications. Just bolting on AI will not deliver the benefits that AI offers. This is what Khalaf is working on at WSO2. She sees all applications becoming AI-native in the same way as organisations talk about being cloud-native. It will be a default state for developers.

But there are challenges with AI. Most implementations are non-deterministic. Khalaf commented, “You call it twice with the same thing, it gives you a different answer. They are probabilistic in terms of their responses and how they’re putting them together” To overcome this, we need to understand them better and develop guardrails to prevent problems.
