Appointment Door - Photo by Dima Pechurin on UnsplashSirionLabs has appointed Evangelos Apostolou as its new General Counsel. He will oversee the company’s legal function from his base in London. While SirionLabs is headquartered in the United States, it has three offices in Europe, and it is perhaps for that reason chose to appoint someone in Europe. The other, and perhaps more relevant reason is that Apostolou has worked with SirionLabs for 6 years. He joined the company in 2016 as President EMEA and then moved to an advisory board member from May 2019 until his appointment as General counsel in 2018.

Apostolou also has deep experience in working within APAC, which is possibly another area that SirionLabs hopes to expand into. Apostolou worked as VP and Chief Counsel, Asia Pacific for BT Global Services and was appointed adjunct professor of law at both the University of Hong Kong and Singapore. He also worked as an Equity Partner and General Counsel of Ernst & Young (EY) in APAC. He also served as a Principal of an EY law practice member firm in Southeast Asia.

Apostolou commented, “I am delighted to be joining the leadership team. Our company’s innovation-led vision of CLM, as much as our commitment to customer success, points to a future of continued global growth and achievement. I am truly excited to be a part of delivering that future.”

A known leader for SirionLabs

The appointment of General Counsel at a CLM vendor is probably more important than for most other software firms. Apostolou has a depth of experience that will be helpful both for the company’s growth but also product development. He has a deep understanding of business contracts, having worked in the corporate sector for so many years.

Ajay Agrawal, founder and CEO of SirionLabs commented, “Evangelos’ depth of experience and focus on operational excellence in scaling impactful legal and contracting functions across the enterprise technology sector is critical to our continued success as a company. His leadership and expertise across both public and private markets will prove invaluable to Sirion in a time of high-growth and transition. We are pleased to welcome Evangelos to the company and look forward to having him as a key member of our executive team.”

Enterprise Times: What does this mean

For SirionLabs, this was an easy appointment to make. Apostolou, in his previous roles at the company, is already known to many. He will have built up trusted relationships with most of the rest of the leadership. That he will lead the function from London is also interesting, much of the legal function at SirionLabs appears to be located in India, rather than the US or indeed Europe. It is another of the Asian countries where Apostolou has worked in.

What will be interesting to see is what difference he makes to SirionLabs now he is in a leadership position. Whereas before, he could make recommendations to the board and sit back, now he has to execute on those suggestions. It will be interesting to see what changes are made and what prompted him to make the step back into an executive role.
