Blockchain Catch-upThis is Charles Brett’s start-of-the-week Enterprise Times ‘blockchain catch-up’ 2022-Week 37. Necessarily it is idiosyncratic and selective.

It is not intended to be comprehensive but does seek to highlight ‘Quick Takes’ on specific developments as well interesting pieces to read, a listing of some (not all) announcements/press releases and pointers to upcoming events.

Quick Take(s) – Charles Brett’s Blockchain Catch-up 2022-Week 37

‘The Merge’ and its implications

Ethereum’s software upgrade – usually referred to as ‘The Merge’ – has the potential to change how transactions are managed on its blockchain. While this upgrade will not accelerate transaction execution speeds, allegedly this will come later, it does mark one major change from Bitcoin – a vastly reduced carbon footprint, enabled by the move from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake. By some estimates ‘The Merge’ will cut CO2 output by 99%.

Quick Take: the climate implications of ‘The Merge’ are significant. But as significant is the possible opening of blockchains, in this case, Ethereum, to become a genuine part of the global financial system, f the finance sector funds Proof of Stake, thereby making it an acceptable investment vehicle. To this end, there are a number of explorations of what ‘The Merge’ means below.
