The threat of stable and accessible quantum computing has energised the world of encryption. There is a scramble to find an alternative way of securing data that means it isn’t susceptible to the vast processing power quantum computers offer. To solve this problem, NIST has been looking for new and more secure protocols but is still at least two years away from a viable solution.
Among the solutions available today is Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). The advantage of deploying quantum technologies is that it makes everything tamperproof. Any attempt to listen in or interfere causes a change in the quantum state. The problem is that such technologies only work on point to point networks and have a distance limitation. Additionally, organisations who had the technology in the past have rejected it due to complexity and cost.
To find out what is changing and making QKD a commercial choice for organisations, Enterprise Times talked with John Prisco, CEO and Founder of Quantum Xchange. Prisco talked about what Quantum Xchange has done to solve the distance and usability issues. His company is already sending Quantum Keys over 1,000 miles and could go even further. More importantly, the technology can be added to any existing IT environment without having to retrain staff.
