As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility program, Intuit has announced the donation of $2 million to food banks supporting federal workers in the US. As the crisis deepens, several organisations are looking to help support the unpaid workers. CNN reported a number of non profit organisations that are providing food. It also reported that some states are providing unemployment benefits. The Intuit donation may increase as it is also matching employee donations of up to $5000.
Intuit has chosen to assist food banks where there is a higher concentration of workers. Locations include:
- Alaska: Food Bank of Alaska
- Hawaii: Hawaii Food Bank
- Maryland: Maryland Food Bank
- New Mexico: Roadrunner Food Bank
- Virginia: Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia (Norfolk area)
- Washington D.C.: Capital Area Food Bank
- West Virginia: Mountaineer Food Bank, Facing Hunger Food Bank
Sasan Goodarzi, Chief Executive Officer at Intuit commented: “We’re committed to powering prosperity around the world, especially in communities that need it most. Across the U.S. there are communities experiencing a big financial impact from workers missing multiple paychecks. Food banks are essential to putting food on the table for many of these workers during this time of need.”
Enterprise Times: What does this mean
As the crisis approaches its second month one must remember this is not like industrial action where the employees have chosen to withhold labour. It is their employing organisation that is unable to pay them. It is now the longest budget crisis in United States history and while it could end at any time shows little sign of doing so. Donations such as this by Intuit will alleviate suffering. More enterprises are likely making similar donations, though this is the only one to date that has been brought to the attention of Enterprise Times. However, Intuit provide applications such as TurboTax, QuickBooks and Mint, that Federal workers may already or could soon use.
