SAP reaches 1000 (Grand) customers

SAP has announced that it has reached a milestone of 1,000 cloud-based human capital management (HCM) customers in EMEA. Included on this list is BAT (British American Tobacco) who have selected SuccessFactors to provide a single HRM solution across the globe.

The announcement around BAT selecting SAP SuccessFactors is not a new win but part of a transformation process that started in 2009. Back then they had 62 SAP and CS3 instances of ERP within the multinational company and they wanted to consolidate down to one.

This latest announcement is about moving HCM into the cloud and continues the process of consolidating solutions into a single cloud-based one for BAT’s 57,000 global employees.

Phil Colman, CIO at BAT explains further: “Our IT strategy focuses on a single portfolio of connected applications running on standardized technology to drive competitive advantage across the business.

“Implementing SAP SuccessFactors solutions will help us to continue to deliver on that strategy.

The press releases states that BAT will be implementing the full SuccessFactors® suite including SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central, SAP SuccessFactors Recruiting, SAP SuccessFactors Performance & Goals and SAP SuccessFactors Learning which form part of the HR Core and SuccessFactors Talent solutions. There is no mention of the analytics or collaboration software being implemented though.

Once BAT has implemented the solution across the 200 countries it operates in they will have a hostic view of their whole operation and talent. How long this will take however has not been announced, nor has the value of the deal and whether there is another minimum term for the SaaS solution. This isn’t a new win for SAP but a migration of solutions from on-premises to cloud-based with one of their key customers.

If however SAP are able to continue to persuade those on-premises customers to migrate to the cloud with their own solutions then the future is looking good. Mike Ettling, president, SuccessFactors commented on the benefits that SuccessFactors would bring by saying:

Market leaders like BAT become leaders by focusing on making their people successful so the business will be successful. Managing a high-performing global workforce requires HR solutions that support today’s leadership, identify tomorrow’s leadership, and engage employees with tools that make their lives easier.

“With the SAP SuccessFactors HCM Suite, BAT will bring in standardization of global processes along with best-in-class talent management to support the business’s vision and strategy.”

With BAT SAP also achieves the landmark of 1,000 customers in the cloud in EMEA for HCM customers, although it seems not all are using SuccessFactors.

  1. good and balanced report. On the “winning Oracle legacy”, in the past earning calls, some large Peoplesoft customers have been announced: Danone, Bureau Veritas, Alstom Transport, Alcatel-Lucent, etc.
and that’s for the one that are public.
